Initiatives

Backpacks & Badges

Backpacks & Badges is a new initiative created by Playing 4 A Purpose (P4AP) to identify the children in Winnipeg that are most in need of additional support and funding during the back-to-school season, as well as create a positive relationship with law enforcement in the city. P4AP aims to better the individual situations of the children we work with, and closing the gap between vulnerable youth and Winnipeg Police Service (WPS)/Winnipeg Police Association (WPA) will promote healthier relationships with authoritative figures in the future.

We have partnered with the WPA to select 50 children from the schools in Winnipeg or children that are new to Canada that require the most support. On September 4, 2019, the P4AP staff as well as officers of the WPS will accompany these children to Staples where they will each receive a brand new backpack and $100.00 to spend on their required supplies for the upcoming school year.

Following the shopping trip, we will be hosting a barbecue with members from each of our other initiatives (FIT Communications, MTYP, Attack Basketball, Recruit Ready), where a representative from each will be given the opportunity to speak more about what they do, the programs they offer, and how to sign up. This will give the children the opportunity to mingle with the officers and each other, as well as learn more about the programs P4AP has partnered with and see if they’d like to get involved.

Recruit Ready

The premier football training program in Winnipeg, MB, preparing young athletes for the next level of their athletic career.

Playing 4 A Purpose works with Recruit Ready to provide high school (and some college) students with athletic training and the chance to build social connections with other students that have similar goals and interests. P4AP’s donation helps Recruit Ready put on workshops and other programs at no cost to the participants. In order to be a part of Recruit Ready, P4AP encourages students to maintain a certain GPA as well as volunteer a portion of their time each month to other non-profit organizations.

Attack Basketball

Basketball programs for youth aged 5-18, focusing on both the physical and mental fundamentals of the game.

Attack Basketball and Playing 4 A Purpose work together to provide jerseys, staff, and regular basketball programs for youth interested in the sport. They offer programs for both boys and girls at every grade level, and P4AP encourages students to volunteer a portion of their time each month to other non-profits in order to participate.

Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP)

One of the most respected theatre companies in Canada, creating and presenting productions and using theatre-in-education to illustrate social issues.

2019 will be the first year of partnership between Playing 4 A Purpose and MTYP, and one of the first initiatives to incorporate the arts. The bursaries provided will enable children from inner city schools to attend some of the MTYP theatre classes, and allow them to put on small productions for their classmates.

Fit Communications

Inspiring young girls to get involved in sports and fitness, feel confident, and live a healthy lifestyle.

Playing 4 A Purpose will be directly involved in the Fit Communications Inspiration Award, an achievement issued to one of the top five finalists chosen that recognizes hard work and dedication and provides a grant to go toward the winner’s continued pursuit of sport excellence. Over the course of the year, P4AP will support Fit Communications with some of their other programs, and encourage young girls to get involved.

Butler’s Backpacks:

Butler’s Backpacks is an ongoing contest run through Playing 4 A Purpose in partnership with 92.1 CITI to
engage community members through social media. The object of this program is to acknowledge, educate and elevate community members on the importance of a backpack to many youths. For many a backpack is more than a tool, it is a life line. Our goal is to make sure deserving kids get the tools they need to succeed.

How to participate:

  1. Post a photo of your child’s worn out backpack on Facebook or Instagram with a caption describing how long they have had this backpack as well as what you think should be in the backpack.
  2. Use the hashtag #butlersbackpacks
  3. Tag Playing 4 A Purpose in the photo
  4. Winners will be selected every week and announced on the Playing 4 A Purpose Facebook page
